چکیده

We report the discovery of a partial Einstein ring of radius 1. 48 produced by a massive (and seemingly isolated) elliptical galaxy. The spectroscopic follow-up at the VLT reveals a 2L⋆ galaxy at z = 0.986, which is lensing a post-starburst galaxy at z = 3.773. This unique configuration yields a very precise measure of the mass of the lens within the Einstein radius, (8.3 ± 0.4) 1011h−1 70 M⊙. The fundamental plane relation indicates an evolution rate of d log(M/L)B/dz = −0.57 ± 0.04, similar to other massive ellipticals at this redshift. The source galaxy shows strong interstellar absorption lines indicative of large gasphase metallicities, with fading stellar populations after a burst. Higher resolution spectra and imaging will allow the detailed study of an unbiased representative of the galaxy population when the universe was just 12% of its current age.

Discovery of Multiply Imaged Galaxies behind the Cluster and Lensed Quasar

We have identified three multiply imaged galaxies in Hubble Space Telescope images of the redshift z = 0.68 cluster responsible for the large-separation quadruply lensed quasar, SDSS J1004+4112. Spectroscopic redshifts have been secured for two of these systems using the Keck I 10m telescope. The most distant lensed galaxy, at z = 3.332, forms at least four images, and an Einstein ring encompas...

The Cosmic Horseshoe: Discovery of an Einstein Ring around a Giant Luminous Red Galaxy

We report the discovery of an almost complete (∼ 300) Einstein ring of diameter 10 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5). Spectroscopic data from the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory reveals that the deflecting galaxy has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion in excess of 400 kms and a redshift of 0.444, whilst the source is a star-forming galaxy with a reds...

The Sloan Lens Acs Survey. Vi: Discovery and Analysis of a Double Einstein Ring

We report the discovery of two concentric partial Einstein rings around the gravitational lens SDSSJ0946+1006, as part of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey. The main lens is at redshift zl = 0.222, while the inner ring (1) is at redshift zs1 = 0.609 and Einstein radius REin1 = 1.43 ± 0.01. The wider image separation (REin2 = 2.07±0.02′′) of the outer ring (2) implies that it is at higher redshift than ...

Se p 20 02 The Redshift of the Lensed Object in the Einstein Ring B 0218 + 357

We present a secure redshift of z = 0.944±0.002 for the lensed object in the Einstein ring gravitational lens B0218+357 based on five broad emission lines, in good agreement with our preliminary value announced several years ago based solely on the detection of a single emission line. Subject headings: gravitational lensing — galaxies: redshifts – galaxies: individual (B0218 + 357)

Redshift of the Einstein Ring in MG 1549 + 305

A deep spectrum taken with the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) at the Keck II Telescope as part of the Lenses Structure and Dynamics (LSD) Survey reveals the redshifts of the extremely red source of the radio Einstein Ring in the gravitational lens system MG1549+305 (zs = 1.170 ± 0.001) and an intermediate redshift lensed spiral galaxy (zG2 = 0.604 ± 0.001). The source redshift allows us ...
